The Community Court Effect: How VersaCourt Projects Are Changing Neighborhoods

When communities invest in recreation spaces, the goal often starts with something simple: give people a place to play.

But again and again, game courts end up doing much more than that. They create gathering places where youth stay active, friendships form, and organizations strengthen their role in the community.

Across the country, youth centers, churches, and nonprofit organizations are discovering that a well-designed court – often built with modular game court systems like those from VersaCourt, designed for fast installation, multi-sport performance, and long-term durability – can transform underused spaces into vibrant hubs of activity. The ripple effects often reach far beyond the surface itself – impacting programs, relationships, and the overall energy of a community.

Three recent projects illustrate how that transformation happens.

From Sanctuary to Safe Space: LIFT Youth Center

At LIFT Youth Center, the mission is centered around creating opportunities for young people to grow, connect, and build a better future.

The organization acquired a former church building and saw the potential to transform the large sanctuary into an indoor recreation space for students.

The Challenge

The sanctuary wasn’t originally designed for recreation, which limited opportunities for students to participate in physical activities indoors. At the same time, the space needed to reflect the organization’s mission and identity while providing a durable surface capable of handling frequent use.

The Solution

To make the transformation possible, the facility installed Wood-Grain Court Tile from VersaCourt, configured to fit the unique dimensions of the sanctuary using a custom design tool. The court also incorporated custom branding with LIFT’s logos and colors, visually connecting the space to the organization’s identity.

The modular tile system also provides long-term flexibility because tiles can be removed or reconfigured if the space evolves in the future.

The Impact

Today, the court serves as a central hub for youth activity and mentorship programs.

As one team member explains:

“We really want to support students and ultimately create community where they are discovering and achieving a healthy, successful future.”

The space has also become a place where students take ownership of the environment and mentor one another.

“Those more experienced kids, they own this court, they take care of it, and they use it as their stage to teach. It’s really an awesome thing to see.”

Building Connection Outdoors: Crosspointe Church

At Crosspointe Church, recreation plays an important role in bringing people together.

The church had previously installed a VersaCourt surface but wanted to expand the outdoor area into a multi-game court where youth could gather, play, and build relationships.

The Challenge

Crosspointe needed to make the most of a limited outdoor area while supporting multiple sports and activities. At the same time, any improvements had to be completed efficiently so that weekly youth events and ministry programs could continue uninterrupted.

The Solution

The project upgraded the existing space using VersaCourt Pickleball Performance Tile, which allowed the installation to be completed in under 30 minutes. The modular system created a versatile multi-game surface that supports activities like basketball and pickleball while requiring minimal maintenance.

Using VersaCourt’s design tools, the outdoor area was transformed into a dynamic recreational space designed to encourage active play and connection.

The Impact

The court quickly became a central gathering place for students and families.

“We’ve seen so many relationships with students form through this court and through having this outdoor activity. We’re truly blessed.”

It also encourages youth to spend more time outdoors and engaged with each other.

“All the kids’ ministry just overall get outside, have more fun, play more games, get away from screens, and just stay focused on what truly matters.”

A Court That Reflects the Mission: Boys & Girls Club of Dalton

For organizations like the Boys & Girls Clubs of America, game courts are more than recreation spaces – they are tools for mentorship, confidence building, and community connection.

At the Boys & Girls Club of Dalton, leadership recognized that the existing gym floor no longer reflected the level of care and investment the club provides to students.

The Challenge

The old court surface had become outdated and unsafe while failing to deliver the performance and visual quality the facility needed. At the same time, closing the gym for extended renovations wasn’t an option because the club runs daily youth programming.

The Solution

The facility installed VersaCourt’s Compete Indoor Tile, a modular court surface designed for durability, visual impact, and daily programming. The tile system allowed the team to remove and replace the entire surface in just hours, completing the installation before students arrived.

The result was what staff described as a “night and day transformation”, delivering a brighter, cleaner, and more professional playing environment.

The Impact

The new court supports the club’s mission of helping kids grow through sports and mentorship.

As one staff member shared while watching students experience the new space:

“Seeing the impact and the expressions on the kids’ faces, you’re reminded of why we do this.”

Another reflected on how upgraded facilities strengthen the organization’s impact:

“The better the resources you have, I feel like the bigger of a difference you can make.”

What Are the Benefits of a Community Court?

In short: Community courts provide safe spaces for recreation, increase youth engagement, strengthen community connections, and support programs that bring people together.

Although these projects took place in very different environments – a youth center, a church campus, and a nonprofit facility – they share a common outcome.

Each court created a place where people naturally gather.

Kids show up for pickup games. Youth programs expand their activities. Older students mentor younger ones. Parents and volunteers become spectators and supporters. Over time, what began as a recreation upgrade becomes a cornerstone of community life.

Courts like these succeed because they are flexible spaces. They support organized programs and informal play alike. They give communities a place to move, compete, connect, and celebrate.

And in many cases, they accomplish something even more important: they help organizations fulfill their mission of building stronger communities.

Why Are Modular Courts Popular for Community Facilities?

Modular courts are popular because they install quickly, support multiple sports, and require little maintenance.

For community facilities like schools, parks, and youth centers, modular courts provide a flexible recreation space that can host several sports and activities on the same surface. They can also be installed quickly, minimizing disruptions to ongoing programs. Combined with their durability and low maintenance needs, modular courts offer a practical long-term solution for busy community environments.

One Court Can Spark a Community

Recreation infrastructure often begins as a practical project – a safer playing surface, a renovation, or a new activity space.

But as the projects at LIFT Youth Center, Crosspointe Church, and the Boys & Girls Club of Dalton show, the impact rarely stops there.

A court can become a stage where youth learn leadership, a gathering place where friendships form, and a symbol of investment in the future of a community.

Because in the end, a court doesn’t just change a neighborhood.

It creates one.
