Interview with Donna Kent
What inspired Sprinturf to establish the LEAP Grant Program, and when was it founded?
The program was founded in 2025. We often encounter schools and communities that would benefit from a new field or playground but may not have the full amount needed for a top-of-the-line surface. We wanted to take this opportunity to give back to the communities where we work and live and do our part to help.
Could you explain the eligibility criteria for organizations interested in applying for the LEAP Grant?
To be eligible for the grant, an organization must provide recreational opportunities for people in their community. They need to have their own funding to support the program, and we will provide matching funds. We want to make sure the customer is able to make the most of the investment and also protect the new field or play area through a commitment to proper maintenance to keep it safe.
How does Sprinturf define “innovative” and “inclusive” designs within the context of this grant?
Innovative designs are those that bring new technologies or approaches to the project. This could be anything from incorporating new infill materials such as coconut coir fiber that helps reduce the surface temperature of a field to nearly that of natural grass, to utilizing unique color schemes and logos. Inclusive designs are those that go the extra mile to ensure that proper pathways are included in the project to accommodate wheelchairs and that important necessities like ramps to connect different levels and surfaces that can be easily used by all.
What are the key benefits of incorporating synthetic turf into community athletic fields and play areas?
There are so many! First, the field or play area can be used continuously, and in any type of weather, which increases the amount of recreation and play that a community can participate in. The field can be shared by the primary sports team it’s built for, as well as host band practice and a community concert on the same day. This can all be accomplished without worry of mud or destruction of the grass. Second, synthetic turf provides many safety features for the community, including a level, consistent play surface, underlayments for impact attenuation to make falls safer, and material safety to ensure that the surface will not add PFAS to the environment.

Could you walk us through the application process and any essential deadlines applicants should be aware of?
To apply for the grant, applicants should visit Sprinturf’s LEAP Grant page and fill out the short contact form. That will give them access to the full application, which they can fill out and email back according to the instructions. The applications are due by March 15, 2025.
What level of financial matching is expected from grant recipients, and are there guidelines on sourcing these matching funds?
This is a one-to-one match. If the recipient requests $25,000, they should be prepared to also bring that amount to the project.
How does Sprinturf support grant recipients in ensuring proper installation and long-term maintenance of the synthetic turf?
Sprinturf offers expert installation services from in-house, trained installers. We also offer our SprintCare program, which provides regular maintenance services to keep the turf in top shape.
What common challenges do applicants face during the application process, and how can they be overcome?
The most involved part of the application is preparing detailed project plans and a budget to submit with the application. Sprinturf reps are available to help with that! Simply contact us, and we will provide assistance with preparing these supporting documents.
Beyond funding, does Sprinturf offer any additional resources or support to help communities maximize the benefits of their new athletic or play spaces?
Yes! We will assist with every step of the project, from choosing the best turf system to creating the project plan and designs to assisting with other parts of the project. As a PlayCore company, Sprinturf is uniquely positioned to help communities source everything from shade structures to bleachers.
