Neosho, Missouri — Tarkett Sports’ ClassicCourt has been selected to design and build new tennis courts at Neosho High School on S. Neosho Boulevard. The courts are part of a full reconstruction of the school’s courts and adjoining parking lot by Neosho School District.
In a September 29 column for the Neosho Daily News, Steffen Wiest of the Neosho School District described the project as a full rebuild rather than a resurfacing. Two partners split the work. Olsson, Inc. covers civil and site engineering. ClassicCourt is designing and building the courts.
Built for tournament play
The courts will be striped to United States Tennis Association standards, which qualifies the facility for tournament-level competition. Districts can use that to host events and earn revenue, on top of serving their own team.
Why post-tensioned concrete
The courts will be poured as post-tensioned concrete across two slabs, and that choice is what separates this project from a typical court rebuild. A standard concrete or asphalt court moves with the ground beneath it, so cracks show up within a few seasons and resurfacing becomes a regular budget item. Post-tensioning runs high-strength steel cables through the slab and tightens them after the concrete cures. This keeps the slab under constant compression so it resists cracking and shifting. ClassicCourt backs its post-tension system with a 50-year structural warranty.
Wiest was open about the trade-off. The system costs more upfront, and the district chose it for durability over the lowest bid. Schools comparing options face the same question: pay more now, or pay for repairs every few years.
What it means for other districts
Many schools in the Midwest have aging asphalt courts that are cracked and need patching. Neosho’s decision shows a shift away from resurfacing every five to eight years and toward building once with a longer lifespan in mind.
